Surface Prep & Vinyl Application Procedure

Every graphic we produce is designed with clean application in mind. Over decades of experience, we’ve developed a straightforward installation method that has proven reliable time and time again. By following the step-by-step instructions provided, customers can achieve professional results using the same process we’ve used successfully for years

Surface Preparation – The Most Important StepProper cleaning is the key to a successful installation. Most failures don’t come from the vinyl — they come from surface prep. Follow these steps and you’ll be using the same method we’ve trusted for years.

Step 1 – Remove Surface DirtClean the door or surface with a standard glass cleaner. This removes dust, dirt, and loose debris.Wipe thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth. This gets the obvious grime off — but you’re not done yet.

Step 2 – Remove Invisible Road Film (Very Important)Glass cleaner only removes visible dirt. Most vehicles have road film, wax residue, or light grease that you cannot see — and vinyl will not properly bond to it.To remove this:Use plain paint thinner or mineral spiritsAn alcohol-based cleaner will also workWipe the entire area where the graphic will be applied. Make sure you cover the full surface, not just the center area. This step removes the invisible contamination that causes lifting and edge failure later.

Step 3 – Final Wipe & Evaporation AssistAfter using thinner or mineral spirits, lightly mist the area again with glass cleaner and wipe clean. This helps remove any remaining residue and speeds up evaporation — especially on colder days.Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the graphic.

Important Notes Surface must be completely dry Do not apply in direct rain or on wet surfaces Ideal temperature is moderate (not extremely cold)Take your time — preparation determines results

If you can measure straight take a step back and look at it by taking your time, you can install this successfully. Follow the steps, don’t rush it, and you’ll get professional results.

Vinyl Application – Center Hinge Method This is the method we’ve used for years. It keeps alignment true and allows you to apply one controlled section at a time.

Step 1 – Position and Secure Hold the graphic in place and align it exactly where you want it. Use two small pieces of masking tape — one on each end — just to hold it temporarily while you step back and confirm it’s straight. Take your time here. Once it looks right, it usually is. When alignment is correct, place a strip of masking tape vertically through the center of the graphic. This becomes your hinge. Remove the two small alignment pieces of tape.

Step 2 – Apply the First Side Lift one half of the graphic away from the surface. Carefully peel the backing paper off that half only. Hold the vinyl slightly away from the surface and begin applying from the center hinge outward. Use a firm, overlapping stroke with your squeegee at about a 45-degree angle. Work from the middle toward the outer edge, pushing air out as you go. Take your time and keep steady pressure.

Step 3 – Apply the Second Side Once the first half is down, remove the vertical center hinge tape. Lift the remaining half, peel away the backing paper, and repeat the same process. Again, squeegee from the center outward with overlapping strokes.

Step 4 – Remove Transfer Tape After the vinyl is fully applied, go back over everything once more with the squeegee. Then slowly peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle — almost flat against the surface. Do not pull it straight out ward. If any vinyl lifts: Stop Lay the tape back down Squeegee again Continue slowly

Final Check Press along all edges to ensure full adhesion. Small air bubbles can usually be worked toward the edge. Very fine bubbles may dissipate naturally over time. A Simple Reminder Good preparation and patience make the difference. This is the same proven method we’ve used successfully for years. If you’d rather have us handle the installation, we’re always glad to do so.

Every project picked up at the shop comes with a personal walkthrough of the installation process. These instructions are provided as a backup reference, but you’ll already know the method before you leave.
